Are Bridge Plugs and Cement Retainers the Same Thing?

Cement retainers and bridge plugs (both retrievable and permanent) are commonly used for zone isolation in wellbore operations. While these tools serve similar roles, each tool is designed for a distinct application.

Below, we’ll discuss the differences between bridge plugs and cement retainers, including why the Quinn Ultimate Packer Retrievable Bridge Plug from Avalon Research is your go-to choice for zone isolation and well completion.

Understanding Cement Retainers vs Bridge Plugs

When organizing projects like zone isolation, well abandonment, and retrieval, it’s important to use the right tools to ensure the integrity of your wellsite.

Both bridge plugs and cement retainers are designed for isolation in well projects, but they ultimately serve different purposes. Let’s break down how these two tools differ so you can make the right selection for your well operations:

Bridge Plugs

Bridge plugs are designed for complete isolation of their designated wellbore section, preventing any flow of fluid or gas. These plugs are used for permanent and temporary well shut-downs for selective stimulation, pipe recovery, well-site abandonments, or full project shut-downs.

These tools can be configured in a number of ways, including wireline, slickline, e-line, and mechanical setups.

Permanent and miniature bridge plugs are ideal for complete well abandonments, while retrievable bridge plugs enable oil sites to hit pause on an active wellbore and reactivate the project at a later time.

Cement Retainers

Like bridge plugs, cement retainers are used for zone isolation. However, their main function is to enable controlled placement of cement during squeeze operations by allowing fluid to be pumped through the tool while maintaining isolation below. The design of this tool includes a sliding valve that enables cement and other fluids to flow into the wellbore’s annulus.

Key Differentiators

Application: Cement retainers are primarily used for squeeze operations, while bridge plugs are intended for isolating the upper and lower zones of a wellbore.

While retrievable bridge plugs can be used in squeeze cementing operations in place of a cement retainer, this isn’t usually recommended. The plug will end up on top of the cement, and since most retrievable bridge plugs are made from stainless steel (unlike cement retainers, which are made from softer cast iron), they cannot be removed by drilling.

Fluid control: Cement retainers isolate specific zones and enable fluid control for cement, while bridge plugs offer full isolation to prevent any fluids from flowing from the well’s reservoir.

Versatility: Cement retainers are designed for temporary use only, while bridge plugs are available in permanent and retrievable variants, providing greater versatility for your oilsite’s well abandonment projects.

Where Retrievable Bridge Plugs Excel: Abandonment and Recovery

While retrievable bridge plugs can be used in place of cement retainers in certain circumstances, they are best used in well abandonment and recovery settings.

Retrievable bridge plugs are ideal for oil and gas companies that need to forgo the use of a wellsite on a temporary basis, but plan to resume their operations down the line. At Avalon Research, we developed one of the world’s first retrievable bridge plugs, recognized worldwide as one of the most efficient oil tools on the market.

The Quinn Ultimate Packer is designed to be simple and easy to install; no unnecessary components to fuss with, just the basics.

Our QUP bridge plug can be deployed via slickline, e-line, and coiled tubing, and is also compatible with snubbing equipment. Each QUP is precision-machined in accordance with NACE MR0175 and ISO-15156 for use in sour gas environments, and is suited to high-temperature conditions of up to 300°F/150°C.
