Retrievable bridge plugs are commonly associated with temporary well isolation, but the right tool can provide more flexibility than simply plugging a well. Our QUP Retrievable Bridge Plug from Avalon Research can be configured for several downhole functions, allowing operators to adapt the system to different well requirements.
The QUP is available in five primary configurations: plug, straddle, hanger, AR-Lift, and choke. Understanding the purpose of each can help you determine which configuration is best suited to your downhole operation. Keep reading to learn more about how you can use the Quinn Ultimate Packer downhole!
Plug: Create a Mechanical Barrier
The standard plug configuration creates a mechanical barrier for pressure control within the wellbore. It can be used for pressure management during operations such as snubbing and wellhead changes, as well as sour gas or CO2 zone suppression and offshore collision control. Our Quinn Ultimate Packer is designed in accordance with NACE MR0175 and ISO 15156 standards for safe installation in sour gas environments.
Because the QUP is retrievable, the barrier can be removed when isolation is no longer required. The system can be set and pulled using conventional methods, including slickline, e-line, and coiled tubing, providing flexibility based on the equipment available at the wellsite.
Straddle: Isolate a Specific Zone
A straddle configuration provides targeted zone isolation rather than completely blocking the wellbore. Avalon’s QUP straddle can be used for water, CO2, or H2S shut-off, while its large through-bore configuration allows production to continue through the tool.
This makes the straddle configuration useful when an operator needs to isolate a particular problem area without unnecessarily interrupting production from other zones.
Hanger: Suspend Downhole Equipment
The QUP can also be configured as a hanger for suspending pressure and temperature gauges or recorders in smooth-bore tubing.
Avalon’s hanger configuration is optimized for large internal diameters, enabling the positioning of monitoring equipment downhole without requiring a permanent installation.
This configuration extends the QUP platform beyond conventional well isolation and into downhole monitoring applications.
AR-Lift: Support Artificial Lift Operations
In an AR-Lift configuration, the QUP functions as an artificial lift system hanger. The system is designed to improve lift capacity below the production packer.
Using the QUP platform for artificial lift applications gives operators another option for adapting the retrievable system to production requirements while maintaining the straightforward design associated with Avalon’s downhole tools.
Choke: Control Downhole Flow
The choke configuration provides another way to adapt the QUP platform to specific well requirements. It is compatible with orifice choke, check valve, and pump-open subassemblies, allowing the system to support different approaches to downhole flow control.
Avalon also offers pump-through QUP options with check valves for applications requiring that capability.

The versatility of the QUP means operators are not limited to a single use with the retrievable bridge plug platform. Depending on the configuration, it can provide well isolation, targeted zone isolation, equipment suspension, artificial lift support, or flow control.
