7 Essential Well Tools for Drilling, Intervention, and Completion

There’s a lot that goes into preparing and maintaining oil and gas wells, and to finish the job right, you need the proper tools. The exploration, drilling, measuring, and completion phases all require specialized tools and equipment, many of which you can get from Avalon Research.

We specialize in well isolation and measurement tools, from our miniature bridge plug to our NESS systems. We also offer in-house machining for custom designs, so if you can’t find the right tools for different phases of your operation, we’ve got you covered. Keep reading to learn more about essential oil and gas tools and where to find them!

Exploration and Drilling

The initial phases of well designation rely on precise, powerful drilling tools to create a well opening and prepare it for intervention. Wellsites rely on the following components and systems to complete this stage:

  • Drill bits: A successful drilling operation relies on a quality drill bit to crush, shear, and cut through formation rock.
  • Drill Pipes: These drill tools are long steel tubes that link the surface drill bit to create a secure connection.
  • Collars: Heavy wall drill pipes that add force for enhanced drilling and maintain vibration control.
  • Stabilizers: These devices are used with a bottom hole assembly (BHA) to help control the motion and direction of the drill bit during active drilling. Different types of drilling stabilizers will be deployed depending on the job, including integral blade, sleeve, welded blade, interchangeable blade, roller reamer, and fixed blade stabilizers.

While these tools are critical to drilling operations, Avalon Research focuses primarily on well intervention and completion tools, along with custom downhole tool design and manufacturing.

We work with quality materials like 4130/4140 NACE MR0175 steel alloy in our ISO-9001 compliant facility. If your oil site is in our local service region, contact us to discuss the drilling and exploration tools you require, along with your design and performance specifications.

Intervention and Completion

At Avalon, we specialize in well-completion and intervention tools for both temporary and permanent operations, which you can order directly from our website. Standard intervention and completion tools we offer include:

Bridge plugs: These isolation tools are designed to block oil or gas flow from a well reservoir during well abandonment or zone stimulation.

Permanent bridge plugs are designed for well completions. Our permanent miniature bridge plug is specially engineered for restricted ID environments like coiled tubing and small-bore tubing strings.

Retrievable bridge plugs are used for temporary isolation projects like zone stimulation and short-term well abandonment.

Our signature Quinn Ultimate Packer represents one of the earlier proven designs in retrievable bridge plugs, and is widely used across the industry for dependable, low-cost installation and retrieval.

Avalon bridge plugs can be used for the following operations:

  • Well intervention via slickline, e-line, and coiled tubing
  • Snubbing operations
  • Zone isolation and stimulation
  • Wellhead removal
  • Suspensions

Non-explosive setting systems: Avalon’s NESS system is a self-contained hydraulic setting system for well intervention that removes the explosive component of more traditional setting tools.

This system can be used in conjunction with our bridge plugs and is deployable via slick-line or e-line. This tool offers precise and reliable zone isolation and secures sealants under high pressures.

Our NESS system can be used for the following intervention jobs:

  • Offshore operations
  • High-risk well environments
  • Time-sensitive intervention tasks

Gauge hangers: Gauge hangers are essential downhole components that support a variety of downhole tasks. Our gauge hanger from Avalon Research is designed for reliable installation and retrieval, featuring a simplified mechanical design to reduce potential failure points. Our model is a one-size-fits-all that is compatible with casing sizes ranging from 4-½” to 9-⅝”.

Jobs where a gauge hanger is indispensable include:

  • Production monitoring
  • Data acquisition
  • Hanging memory tools, recorders, and pressure/temperature gauges
  • Well testing
